Why Espresso?

For most of my life, coffee was just coffee. Wake up, pour a cup, drink it half asleep on the way to work, and repeat the next day. I drank regular black coffee for probably 15 years and never really thought much about it beyond getting caffeine into my system.

Then I got introduced to espresso, and honestly, it completely changed how I look at coffee.

It started with a moka pot. Nothing crazy or super expensive, just a simple little stovetop brewer. But the first time I made a cup with it, I immediately noticed the difference. The flavor was way bolder, richer, and smoother than the regular drip coffee I had been drinking forever. It actually tasted like there was depth to it instead of just “hot coffee.”

After that, regular coffee just never hit the same.

Espresso Actually Feels Like a Craft

One thing I didn’t expect was how much I would enjoy the actual process of making espresso. With regular coffee, there’s really not much to it. Throw grounds in a machine, hit a button, and wait.

Espresso feels way more hands-on.

Grinding fresh beans, tamping the puck, pulling the shot, steaming milk — it feels less like making a drink and more like building something. There’s also always something new to tweak or improve. One day you’re adjusting grind size, the next you’re trying different beans or learning how to get better crema.

That’s what makes it addictive honestly. You’re always chasing a better shot.

My Setup

Right now I use a Breville espresso machine along with a scale, tamper, knock box, aerator, and way too many accessories for someone who originally just wanted stronger coffee.

But that’s kind of what happens once you get into espresso.

At first you think:

“I’ll just get a machine.”

Then suddenly you’re researching grinders at midnight and arguing with yourself about bean freshness.

The Flavor Difference Is Insane

The biggest thing for me is still the flavor. Espresso actually lets you notice different tasting notes depending on the roast and beans. Some shots have chocolate flavors, some taste fruity, and some almost taste caramel-like.

Regular drip coffee can still be good, but after getting used to espresso, it honestly tastes watered down to me a lot of the time.

Espresso just has more body and richness to it.

My Favorite Espresso Accessory

Out of everything I’ve bought so far, one of the most useful things has honestly been the knock box. It sounds stupid until you own one.

Before I had it, I was carrying espresso pucks across the kitchen dripping coffee grounds everywhere because my garbage can is on the opposite side of the room. Now I just knock the puck out and immediately make another shot without making a mess.

It’s one of those small things you don’t realize you need until you start making espresso regularly.

Espresso Just Feels Different

I know saying espresso feels “better” is subjective, but to me it really does feel like a more refined experience overall. The machines, the process, the smell, the flavor — it all feels more intentional compared to basic drip coffee.

And honestly, that’s probably why so many people get hooked on it once they start.

At the end of the day, coffee is still coffee, and I’ll probably still drink regular coffee once in a while. But espresso turned coffee from just a caffeine routine into something I actually enjoy making every morning.
